i like what you've done with the blog. see you tomorrow
there's no direct link but i suppose it's not surprising that liking one would follow from liking the other. here’s an excerpt from this morning’s howard jacobson column…..“I must own to some nostalgia in the matter of handbags. My first father-in-law sold handbags and taught me all he knew about them. Whenever my academic career hit a low, which was most of the time, I would revert to selling handbags myself, briefly on Oldham market, less briefly in a craft shop in Cornwall, and for too long on Cambridge market. It was because of my selling handbags on Cambridge market that I lost the chance of a senior lectureship in Australia, the professor who was coming to look me over misunderstanding my Manchester accent and thinking I had said I ran a humbug not a handbag stall, and for that reason never finding me. Who in their right mind, you might wonder, would ever go looking for a humbug stall.”
i always initially feel deterimined not to succumb to its 'recommendations', an attempt to slow the capatilist wheel momentarily perhaps, but, like you say Tom, they are always spot on and I cannot resist ! I've found some authors and albums that are amongst my favourites that way actually.
Fancy HJ being a handbag seller! Who'd have thought. I just realised that he reminds me of the chap Krammer recognises in the airport as someone who owes in money when George is doing the airport run to collect Jerry (after losing a bet to reach the awning outside J's flat).
